History
The Ezell house is within The Plaza Historic District which is protected by local ordinance (2008). It is also part of the larger Eatonton Historic District placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The city of Eatonton is a stop along Georgia's Antebellum Trail and is part of the Historic Piedmont Scenic Byway. It's centrally located in the Historic Heartland of Georgia.
Evan B. Ezell was a merchant and banker before building the Ezell House and gifting the property for the Methodist Church next door. The house stayed in the Ezell family for several generations before being acquired by the Tatum family in the 1930's. A local antiques dealer restored it in the 1990's. The current owners bought in 1997.

Neighborhood
Madison Avenue marks the center of the local Plaza Historic District which overlays the National Register District. It has an active street life with strollers and cyclists, tourists and dog walkers enjoying the parklike setting. Chatting over the fence with friends and neighbors never gets old. Wine parties in the garden when the flowers are in bloom are "de rigueur".
The town is constantly innovating with a long list of past and current projects, thanks to the efforts of Eatonton's active arts community. The Plaza Arts Center (directly across the street from Ezell House) has been restored to a world class 500 seat theatre that hosts musical acts, lectures, weddings, and local plays. The Georgia Writers Museum, the Cotton Warehouse, and the Artisan's Village take advantagtytanpictures.com/e of the new parking downtown around the historic warehouses. Film production company Tytan Pictures moved to Eatonton several years ago and shoots scenes all over town. The Ezell house hosted Veronica Cartwright, Michael Moriarty, and Dale Dickey during the shooting of "The Yellow Wallpaper". They were very entertaining guests. It's an active town with a vibrant community, that retains its peaceful charm.

Garden
The garden contains a large number of established heirloom plants. Most are highly fragrant. In winter, the winter honeysuckle blooms as well as Lenten Roses and Camellias, Winter Sweet, Elaeagnus. In early March the front lawn is a solid mass of blue Ipheion. In mid-March, the sweet scented jonquils bloom in the parterre, followed by Spanish bluebells. Then come the azaleas, Banksia climbing rose, dogwoods and many other flowering bulbs. Later in spring we see Eutin roses pop out and in early summer, the gardenias, huge white Magnolia blossoms and Confederate jasmine make a fragrant display. The Tea Olive blooms repeatedly to add more fragrance. It is impossible to list them all, but suffice to say it is a constant delight.
The current owners installed a parterre garden with 800 boxwoods, brick patio, garden shed, plant nursery, workshop, fountain, stone benches, and trellis. The northern side has a bench swing under the Southern Magnolia which is ideal for staying cool in the summer.
Contrary to belief, boxwoods are very low maintenance which is one reason our ancestors chose them. Boxwood grows very slowly and only need trimming once or twice a year.
The garden is often featured on local garden tours. Five years of garden design and monitoring are recorded here; Ezell House garden journal. More photos at Keith Rowell Garden Design Studio.
